Sustainable development is a term closely connected to social responsibility and the awareness of the necessity of natural resources protection. It is a process of changes where exploitation of resources, investment aspect, technical development orientation are in tune with institutional changes which provide meeting of needs and expectations of the rising and future generations.
The purpose of existence and the main aim of each company is successful business operation, which generates profit. However, this activity is taking place in a certain community that has its expectations and rules, within the framework of limited natural environment, with the users as a constituent part who are making demands, and the employees with their collective and individual aspirations.
Social responsibility defines more equally important dimensions. Special attention is given to ethical behaviour, ecological standards and participation in the education of the community in terms of safety and ecology. Social responsibility refers to distinguishing right from wrong and acting right - ethical behaviour.
Running business in a socially responsible way is becoming an important aspect of both business and company strategy, which refers to Autocesta Rijeka-Zagreb d.d. as well. The point of corporate social responsibility is taking one step further than is prescribed by the law in terms of environment and the society. Therefore, it is important to establish the dialogue and cooperation between the companies and the community. By this we mean the efforts to contribute to sustainable economic development, together with the employees, their families, local and entire community, for the purposes of achieving planned life quality improvement.
The Managing Board of Autocesta Rijeka-Zagreb d.d. signed the Croatian Chamber of Commerce Code of Business Ethics, accepting it as its own set of ethical behaviour rules. Encouragement of ethical behaviour in an organization is accomplished by defining and publishing the rules of conduct, positive example of the management, uncovering and solving potential ethical issues in the early stages, and sanctioning unethical behaviour. Development of moral community, that is a precondition of quality improvement in the community in terms of culture, is thus induced by own example.
Autocesta Rijeka-Zagreb d.d. would like to have best possible relations with the community. In this sense, our employees are members of professional associations and chambers, they are actively taking part in the work of professional bodies, and publishing their works in professional journals and at the conferences during the year.
Reporting is extremely important for each company with the practice of social responsibility, in order for the outer (society, the media, users) and the inner community (employees, owner) learn what has been done. At the end of the year, it is not only a Business Report that is being prepared, but also the report on company's impact to the environment, and the community. Autocesta Rijeka-Zagreb d.d. is preparing this report according to the Guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative.
